Artist statement

“I never doubted my ability, but when you hear all your life you’re inferior, it makes you wonder if the other guys have something you’ve never seen before. If they do, I’m still looking for it”.  This is a quote from the best baseball player in the world,  Hank Aaron.  This quote talks about how all his life people said he was a bad baseball player when actually he is the home run king of baseball.  He never gave up on his skills.  This applies to art to me because when I draw or paint something that I don’t like I keep trying till I get it right.  I try not to give up on my art skills.  For example, painting I am not a good painter at all I love to draw in pencil but when it comes to painting I suck.  But I keep trying till I either get the right color or paint the right part.  My favorite artist that also reminds me of this quote is Ernie Barnes an African American painter.   A former professional football player, artist Ernie Barnes is best known for his unique figurative style of painting and is widely recognized as the foremost African American artist.

Born Ernest Barnes, Jr. on July 15, 1938 to Ernest Sr. and Fannie Mae Geer Barnes during the Jim Crow era in Durham, North Carolina, his mother worked as a domestic for a prominent attorney. As a child, young Ernest would accompany her to work and was allowed to peruse the extensive collection of art books. One day in junior high school, a teacher found the self-admitted fat, introverted young Barnes drawing in a notebook while hiding from the bullies who taunted him daily. This teacher put him on a weightlifting program and when Barnes graduated from high school, he had excelled in football and track and field. I really like this artist because he never gave up and also he was an athlete like me.

The first project we did was the wallpaper color theory I think that I did really good cause I had funn with this project and it turned out pretty good.  The only thing that I wished that I did before is the time I spent on it I wished I spent more time on it so It would look even better.  The second project that I did was the glass project.  I really did not like this project because it did not turn out the way I wanted it to but it looked cool in the end which was ok.

The theme that I am doing is on camping.  When I was younger and still today my family and I go camping all the time and I love the woods and drawing a mountain scene.  So what I pan to do is get a picture that I have took from one of our trips to the virgina mountains and drawing it in pencil to show shading and tone.

To conclude this paper I really do like to do art my mother took me to art classes and I just loved it from then on because it gives me a challenge to do and I love challenges I home this project that I am doing on the mountains turns out really good.

I never doubted my ability, but when you hear all your life you’re inferior, it makes you wonder if the other guys have something you’ve never seen before. If they do, I’m still looking for it.
